So, you want to be an artist? Maybe you’ve dreamed of holding a paintbrush, sketching in the quiet hours of the morning, or sharing your work with the world. It’s an exciting, fulfilling path, but like any calling, it takes dedication, faith, and courage. Whether you’re just starting or trying to rediscover your creative spark, here are ten tips to guide you on this journey.

1. Start with What You Have

Don’t wait for the “perfect” supplies or the “right” time. Use what’s in your hands. A pencil and a scrap of paper are enough to start. God often works through humble beginnings to grow something beautiful.

2. Make Time to Create

Life gets busy, but creativity needs space to breathe. Set aside time each week—or each day, if possible—to focus on your art. Even 15 minutes of sketching or painting can build momentum.

3. Embrace the Process, Not Perfection

Art is a journey, not a finish line. Your early work might feel messy, but that’s okay. Each piece you make is a step closer to discovering your style. Remember, God created the world in stages—your art can grow the same way.

4. Learn from Others

Study other artists. Take a class, watch tutorials, or attend workshops. Learning from those who’ve gone before can inspire and refine your craft. It’s humbling to remember we’re all part of a bigger creative story.

Study with artists and study artists. If you approach from both directions, you will increase your skills rapidly. Some of my favorite artists are Van Gogh, Monet, Arthur Streeton, Albert Bierstadt, Edgar Payne, Peder Mork Monsted, Frederick Judd Waugh, Hans Heysen, Frederic Edwin Church, Caspar David Friedrich, and so many more.

5. Experiment Fearlessly

Try new techniques, materials, and styles. Maybe you’ve always worked with watercolors, but you’re curious about acrylics or charcoal. Experimentation leads to growth—and sometimes surprising breakthroughs.

6. Create from the Heart

The best art comes from a place of authenticity. Ask yourself what moves you, what stories you want to tell, or what truths you want to share. When you infuse your work with heart, it resonates with others.

7. Be Patient with Yourself

Great art takes time, and so does becoming an artist. Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Trust the process, and allow yourself the grace to grow at your own pace.

8. Seek Feedback, But Stay True to Your Vision

Sharing your work with others can be scary, but it’s one of the best ways to improve. Listen to feedback, but don’t let it define you. God gave you a unique voice—use it boldly.

9. Build Community

Find other artists to connect with. Join a local art group, participate in online forums, or attend creative meetups. Having a community makes the journey less lonely and provides encouragement when you need it most.

10. Trust the Giver of Your Gifts

Your creativity is a gift from God, given with purpose. Trust Him to guide your artistic path, even when you’re unsure where it’s leading. Pray over your work, and let it be an offering back to Him.

Remember: You Are an Artist

Becoming an artist isn’t about mastering every technique or selling out galleries. It’s about showing up, creating from the heart, and letting your work reflect who you are. Whether you paint, sculpt, draw, or photograph, your art is part of God’s bigger story. So pick up your tools, take a deep breath, and start.
